Area description: Vatos is a small traditional village nestled into the hillside of Aghios Giorgis, with a magnificent view to the Ropa valley. It covers an area of 7,000 square meters and has 500 inhabitants, who are simple and warm people occupied mostly with the cultivation of the land. Vatos is a place where the directness and gentleness of the traditional old Corfiot can be found. The opportunities for entertainment for the locals in the village are engagements and weddings but the real fun happens during 3 festivals. The first Panagiri (festival), St. George festival is a welcome to the spring, the second which takes place on the 15th of August is to honour the Virgin Mary and the third on the 24th of September is a farewell to the summer and a welcome to autumn. In the village there are two Byzantine churches dating back to the 13th century, St. Nicholas and St. Georgios. Not too far from the village of Vatos is a steep rough path leading to 'Myrtiotissa' where there is the third interesting Byzantine church of the area, dating back to the 14th century. North of the village of Vatos you will find Ermones, a small bay with craggy rocks and wooded hillside where archaeological finds have shown an existence of life since the Bronze Age. Over looking the Ermones' bay is the monastery of Madonna Apelistra. A little further north is Antipsos bay with deep clear waters and a pebble beach. The facilities available on the beach are well organised and here you will find one of the 6 diving schools on the island and a variety of other water sports. On both banks of a small river flowing from the Ropa Valley into the bay, there are beautiful hotels, bars and traditional fish tavernas. Only 2 km away there are a number of buildings that can accommodate almost 1,500 visitors. Following the river you arrive in Ropa Valley, which covers an area of 10,000 acres. The valley is renowned for its wild life such as rare reptiles, birds, amphibian and fishes. A part of Ropa Valley has been developed as the Corfu Golf Club, which extends over 1,000 acres. On the right side of Vatos another path leads to Myrtiotissa beach, an almost deserted beach with fine sand, shallow water and pine trees almost down to the seashore. Because of its beauty and solitude it is very attractive to the nudists who come here to enjoy the sun in peace and quiet. From time to time Vatos has offered hospitality to botanists and bird watchers from all over the world. The area is perfect to enjoy a peaceful vacation, taking long walks, horse-riding or to enjoy the pleasure of a game of golf.
